Definition.Influence [boolean/def/influence]

For a Boolean-valued function 𝑓:{±1}𝑛{1,1}, the influence of coordinate 𝑖 on 𝑓 is the probability that flipping the 𝑖th bit changes the output of 𝑓;

𝐈𝐧𝐟𝑖[𝑓]=𝐏𝐫𝑥{±1}𝑛[𝑓(𝑥)𝑓(𝑥𝑖)],

where

𝑥𝑖=(𝑥1,𝑥2,,𝑥𝑖1,𝒙𝒊,𝑥𝑖+1,,𝑥𝑛).

Using the (discrete) derivative operator, we may generalize the definition of influence to general real-valued Boolean functions. For 𝑓:{±1}𝑛, the influence of coordinate 𝑖 on 𝑓 is defined to be

𝐈𝐧𝐟𝑖[𝑓]=𝐄𝑥{±1}𝑛[𝐷𝑖𝑓(𝑥)2]=𝐷𝑖𝑓22.
